How to Prep for Your Video Shoot

So … you’ve hired Second Floor to shoot a video, and filming day is approaching fast! Whether it be your story, someone else’s story, a commercial, or a documentary, the process has many moving parts. What can you expect from us, and how can you prepare for it? Let’s dive into some of the prep basics!

Our process:

  • Preparation: When you come to us with your video idea, we can help round out details and guide you if needed. Then, we will usually have one to two pre-production calls leading up to the shoot, ensuring both sides have a clear understanding of the plan for the project.

  • Load-in: We will arrive with all the necessary gear, and depending on the setup, this can take 30 minutes to an hour.

  • Set-up: If we did not determine a filming location beforehand, we will evaluate the space and choose the best spot to film interviews and b-roll. We have everything we need to make the video come to life. Audio, camera gear, lighting, stands, and cords are all things we bring to filming days.

  • Filming: Depending on the type of video, this part of the process can take a few hours or days. We want to make sure we have all the footage we need to tell your complete story in the best way possible.

Your Prep:

  • Have the general idea/storyline/theme set in stone.

  • Make sure your talent knows what they’re there for and what they will be doing.

  • Solidify the outline for what will be said or what story will be told. If applicable, have the script written and sent to us so we can have it ready to go on the teleprompter.

  • Get the location and time arranged.

  • For wardrobe just wear whatever you are most comfortable in and what matches the discussed subject matter. Bringing a few outfit options is never a bad idea. Please do not wear white if possible, no small prints, and no large logos (unless it is your company’s logo).

Remember, this is not a one-size-fits-all list. Each project will be unique, and most likely, so will the preparation. At first glance, this could be overwhelming. We understand that and can help you in the process. If you have questions, please reach out to us! Our end goal is a smooth process with a quality outcome. We want to help you tell your story!
